Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Chimney Cleaning Before & After in Dallas, TX
You can read about chimney sweeping all day, but nothing lands like seeing the actual flue before and after. Ashby carries ash right in the name, and we’ve been hauling it out of Dallas chimneys since 2002. Below are real transformations from Chimney Cleaning jobs across the metro area, each one written by Nathan Corliss, Owner at Ashby Chimney Dallas. The photos stay here as proof of what a proper sweep actually looks like.

Creosote Removal in a Lakewood Heights Fireplace
Before
AfterWe arrived at a Lakewood Heights home where the homeowner hadn’t swept in five years. The flue liner (the clay or steel tube that vents combustion gases out of your home) wore creosote that Nathan described as having “more layers than a Dallas spring forecast.” We ran rotary rods with a steel whip head, removed roughly two gallons of debris, and left the liner surface clean enough to inspect with a camera. The fireplace went from a visible smoke stain to safe burning condition in under two hours.
Animal Nest Clearance in a North Dallas Chase
Before
AfterThis North Dallas chimney had a full bird nest wedged about six feet down from the cap. The homeowner called because smoke was backing into the living room every time they lit a fire. We removed the nest in sections, vacuumed the loose debris, and swept the flue from top to bottom. The draft returned immediately, and we recommended a standard cap replacement with mesh siding to keep it from happening again.
Glazed Creosote Treatment in a Richardson Brick Fireplace
Before
AfterGlazed creosote is the stubborn stuff. This Richardson flue had a tar-like coating that a standard brush would slide right over. We applied a creosote treatment, let it work into the glaze, then swept with a rotary system to remove the residue. What came out looked like black coffee grounds. The after photo shows the liner’s actual surface texture for the first time in years. If you see shiny, hard creosote on your flue walls, call us before your next fire.
Smoke Chamber Cleanout in a M Streets Home

Most sweeps focus on the flue, but the smoke chamber is where a lot of Dallas soot collects. This M Streets fireplace had a chamber caked with enough soot to restrict airflow. We vacuumed the chamber, swept the flue above it, and removed a full bag of black dust. The homeowner said the fireplace drew better than it had in a decade. That’s the difference between a flue-only sweep and doing the whole job right.
Wood Stove Flue Sweep in an East Dallas Converted Garage

Wood stoves run hotter and faster than open fireplaces, which means creosote can build in different patterns. This East Dallas garage conversion had a single-wall stove pipe with flaky creosote peeling from the interior. We disassembled the pipe sections, brushed each one, and swept the vertical flue above. The stove went from sluggish to roaring on the first test burn. Wood stove flues need attention at least once a year, sometimes twice.
Dryer Vent and Chimney Combo in an Oak Cliff Bungalow

An Oak Cliff bungalow had both a wood-burning fireplace and a dryer vent running through the same chase. Lint had migrated into the chimney cavity and mixed with creosote, creating a fire hazard we could see on camera before we even started. We swept the flue, cleared the dryer vent, and separated the airflow paths with proper venting. The homeowner got two clean systems for the price of one visit. Call us at (361) 314-3193 if you’ve got a chase doing double duty.
