Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
DuraFlex Damper Repair: The Dallas Owner’s Guide
We stock and install DuraFlex-compatible damper repair parts across Dallas, with most repairs running between $285 and $520 installed depending on the damper type and what failed. We carry the common DuraFlex damper components on our trucks, so most jobs are done in a single visit. Most Dallas homeowners figure out the damper has failed the hard way: a smoke-filled living room on the first cold snap, or a draft that makes the couch feel like it’s parked outside in a January north wind. The damper sits right at the top of the firebox or in the throat, and when it stops seating properly, the chimney becomes an open pipe from your fireplace to the sky.
Which DuraFlex Models This Applies To
DuraFlex is best known in Dallas for their flexible aluminum chimney liners, but their damper components show up in two common configurations. The first is a top-mount damper that pairs with their liner systems, usually a spring-loaded cap assembly that sits at the flue termination. The second is a throat damper retrofit that mounts just above the firebox, often installed when an older cast-iron damper warped or rusted out. If you’re not sure which one you have, look for a small metal tag or stamped number near the damper frame, or check the liner cap at the roofline. A DuraFlex top-mount will have a visible cable or chain running down the flue to a handle or lever inside the firebox.
One compatibility gotcha we run into regularly in Dallas: DuraFlex damper parts are sized to match specific liner diameters, typically 5.5-inch through 8-inch round. A damper sized for a 6-inch liner will not seat correctly on a 7-inch liner, even if it looks close. We measure the liner ID before quoting anything. As an independent chimney company, we’re not affiliated with DuraFlex directly, but we’ve installed and repaired their components for years and keep the common sizes and replacement cables, springs, and cap assemblies stocked locally. When an OEM DuraFlex part isn’t available or is backordered, we’ll tell you plainly what the aftermarket option is and whether we’d put it in our own fireplace.

Signs Your DuraFlex Damper Is Failing
- Smoke rolls back into the room when you light a fire. The damper isn’t opening fully, or the cable has stretched so the plate only opens partway. Either way, combustion gases aren’t venting the way they should.
- A cold draft comes down the chimney even when the damper is “closed.” The damper blade or gasket has warped or worn, so it no longer makes a seal. In Dallas winters, that draft is a real heating-bill problem, not just an annoyance.
- The cable or handle is stiff, stuck, or spins without resistance. That usually means the cable has stretched, the spring has failed, or the connecting hardware came loose. Forcing it can snap the cable entirely.
- You hear metal rattling or banging inside the flue when the wind gusts. The damper cap or linkage has come loose and is moving around at the flue termination. Left alone, it can damage the liner or become a spark risk.
- You smell a stale, sooty odor even when the fireplace hasn’t been used in months. That’s flue air settling back into the house because the damper isn’t sealing. On humid Dallas summer days, that odor gets stronger as the air pressure shifts.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
DuraFlex damper repair in Dallas runs between $285 and $520 installed in most cases. A simple cable or spring replacement usually lands at the lower end. A full top-mount cap assembly or throat damper replacement with new mounting hardware runs higher, particularly if we need to fabricate a mounting plate or adjust the liner connection. The big variable isn’t the parts cost, it’s the labor and the condition of what the damper mounts to. If the surrounding flue tile or liner collar has deteriorated, that’s more work, and we’ll show you exactly what we’re seeing before we touch anything.
Every Ashby Chimney Dallas repair gets a written price before work starts. The number on the invoice matches the number we quoted at the door. The work carries a written guarantee, and if a covered repair fails within the guarantee period, we come back and fix it at no charge. That’s the 365-Day Done Right Promise, and it’s part of the Kingswell Guarantee that every Ashby location operates under. We use professional-grade materials from recognized chimney-trade brands, including DuraFlex, HeatShield, and Gelco. Not whatever happened to be rolling around in the van.
DIY or Call Us?
There’s one thing an owner can safely check: whether the cable or chain has visible slack, kinks, or has slipped off its mount at the firebox end. That’s a look, not a repair. What we don’t recommend is climbing onto a Dallas roof to inspect or replace a top-mount damper assembly yourself. Between the height, the pitch of most Dallas rooflines, and the fact that the damper cap sits at the flue termination right where sparks and weather do their worst, it’s the kind of job where a misstep has real consequences. The spring-loaded cap assemblies hold tension, and if one lets go while you’re leaning over it, you’re not going to have a good afternoon.
Same goes for pulling a throat damper out of the firebox and trying to match it up from a parts website. We’ve seen too many Dallas homeowners order what looked like the right part online, only to find the mounting holes don’t line up or the size is off by a quarter inch. By the time they’ve spent two weekends on it, they could have had us out once. If you want to try the cable adjustment yourself, we’ll tell you honestly over the phone whether it’s worth your time. Call (361) 314-3193 and we’ll help you figure out what you’re working with.
FAQs
A DuraFlex damper in Dallas typically lasts 10 to 15 years, though top-mount assemblies exposed to our summer sun and spring hail often need attention sooner. The cable and spring are usually the first things to go, not the damper plate itself. Heat, humidity cycles, and the occasional chimney fire all shorten that lifespan, so we check damper condition as part of every inspection we do in the Dallas area.
If your damper is getting stiff or rattling, call (361) 314-3193 and we’ll quote the repair before we book anything.
Most DuraFlex dampers can be repaired without replacing the whole assembly. Cables, springs, handles, and linkage hardware are replaceable on their own, and those are the parts that fail first on Dallas fireplaces. Full replacement is usually only necessary when the damper plate itself is cracked, badly warped, or the mounting frame has rusted through. We always show you the damaged part and explain what can be fixed before recommending replacement.
Bring us a photo of what you’re seeing, or call (361) 314-3193 and we’ll tell you what’s realistic.
Most DuraFlex damper repairs take 45 minutes to 2 hours, depending on whether it’s a cable/spring swap or a full top-mount replacement. If we’re also addressing liner fit or replacing the cap, plan on the longer end. We show up at the time we said we would, quote the price before the work starts, and leave the job site cleaner than we found it.
Call (361) 314-3193 to schedule a visit, and we’ll tell you what to expect for your specific setup.
Yes, we keep the common DuraFlex damper components on our service trucks, including cables, springs, handles, and cap assemblies for the most common liner diameters. If you have an uncommon size or a specialty configuration, we can usually source it from our supplier network within a couple of business days. We also stock parts for HeatShield and Gelco systems when the repair crosses over into liner work.
Tell us your model or the size stamped on the damper frame, and call (361) 314-3193. We’ll confirm what we have before you book.
