Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Gelco Chimney Cap Installation: The Dallas Owner’s Guide
We stock and install Gelco-compatible chimney caps throughout Dallas, with most cap installations running between $425 and $780 installed depending on flue size, cap model, and roof access. If your existing Gelco cap is rusted through, missing its lid, or letting rain into the firebox, we can usually get a replacement on the truck and the swap done the same visit. Most Dallas homeowners discover the problem the unpleasant way: water staining the ceiling near the chimney, a rust streak down the brick, or the distinct smell of wet ash after a storm blows through from the west.
We’re an independent chimney company, not affiliated with Gelco, but we’ve been working with their caps long enough to know which models hold up in North Texas weather and which ones don’t. The short version: Gelco makes a solid cap, but the mounting hardware and screen take a beating from Dallas hail, spring thunderstorms, and summer UV. When the cap fails, it’s almost always the part nobody looks at until water is already inside.
Which Gelco Models This Applies To
Gelco chimney caps come in a few lines, and the one on your chimney tells us what we’re dealing with within about 30 seconds of looking at it. The most common in Dallas are the standard single-flue caps, the multi-flue caps for homes with two or three flues side by side, and the top-mount caps that sit on a full-width chase cover for prefab fireplaces. Each has its own mounting pattern and screen mesh, and they are the opposite of interchangeable.
The compatibility gotcha most people run into: Gelco caps are sized to the outside dimensions of your flue tile, not the inside opening. A “13×13” Gelco cap fits a flue tile measuring roughly 13 inches by 13 inches on the outside, and the cap sits over it with about a half-inch of clearance. If you measure the inside opening and order to that number, you’ll get a cap that falls straight through the flue. We measure the tile exterior, the crown around it, and the height of the flue before we quote you a cap, because a cap that’s too short on a tall flue creates exactly the draft problem you’re trying to avoid.
When the original Gelco cap is beyond saving, we recommend a direct Gelco replacement or a cap from Olympia Chimney or Copperfield if a different screen or lid style fits the house better. OEM is rarely the cheapest option, but for homeowners who want the exact same fit and finish, it’s the right call. Our trucks carry a working stock of single-flue and multi-flue Gelco caps in the common Dallas tile sizes, plus the stainless mounting hardware and high-temperature silicone.

Signs Your Gelco Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing
- Water in the firebox after rain. The most common failure we see. The cap’s lid has rusted through or the mounting band has shifted, letting rain run straight down the flue. Ash turns into a paste and the smell hangs in the room for days.
- Rust streaks down the chimney crown or brick. The cap’s steel is giving up. Once the galvanized coating or stainless finish is breached, the rust runs every time it rains and stains the masonry. The streaks are cosmetic until they’re not; rusted-out caps start dropping flakes into the flue that can land on the smoke shelf and trap moisture.
- Birds or squirrels getting in. The screen mesh on a Gelco cap is the first thing to go in Texas weather. Once there’s a hole, a squirrel or starling will find it. We’ve pulled nests out of flues in Lakewood that were built up enough to block the draft entirely.
- Draft problems when the wind blows. A cap that’s come loose or tilted on its mounting band changes the wind pattern at the flue opening. You’ll notice smoke backing up into the room only when the wind comes from a certain direction. That’s not a coincidence; it’s the cap.
- Visible damage from hail or falling branches. Dallas hail is rough on chimney caps. A dented lid may still function, but a cracked or separated lid won’t shed water. We find bent screens and broken mounting tabs after most major hail events in the metroplex.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
Most Gelco chimney cap installations in Dallas run between $425 and $780 installed. On the low end, you’re looking at a stainless single-flue cap with a standard screen on an easily accessible roof. The high end covers larger multi-flue caps, tall flues requiring a taller lid, steep roof pitches that need extra safety setup, or a cap that has to be custom-ordered because the flue tile is an odd size. We price this work at the door before anything happens, so the number we quote is the number on the invoice.
Every cap installation includes removal and disposal of the old cap, cleaning and inspection of the flue opening, installation of the new cap with stainless hardware, and a full written report with photos of the finished work. The work is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the cap fails due to our installation inside the guarantee period, we come back and fix it at no charge. That’s the Kingswell way, and it’s the reason we put the promise in writing instead of describing it over the phone.
DIY or Call Us?
There are a few things you can check from the ground without a ladder. If you have binoculars, look at the cap’s lid and screen for rust, holes, or missing sections. Check for rust streaks on the crown below the cap. Look at whether the cap sits level on the flue or whether it’s tipped. Those observations tell us a lot before we even show up for the quote.
What we don’t recommend is a homeowner on a ladder swapping out a chimney cap on a Dallas roof, especially a two-story house with a steep pitch or clay tile roof. The combination of roof height, flue location, and the need to work over an open flue while handling stainless parts is where things go sideways. Add a wet roof from morning dew or a surprise storm, and that’s a fall waiting to happen. If you want the cap matched to the flue correctly, sealed properly, and warrantied, call us at (361) 314-3193. We’ll quote the price before we touch anything, and we’ll show up when we said we would.
FAQs
A stainless Gelco cap in Dallas typically lasts 10 to 15 years, while galvanized models run closer to 7 to 10 before rust or hail damage takes them out. The screen mesh is usually the first component to fail, often well before the lid. Call (361) 314-3193 if you suspect your cap is near the end; we’ll assess it honestly and tell you if it can wait.
Sometimes, yes. If the lid is intact but the screen has holes, we can often replace just the screen mesh. If the mounting band or lid is structurally compromised, repair is usually a losing game; the steel has already failed. We’ll show you photos of what we find before recommending anything.
Most single-flue cap installations take between 45 minutes and 2 hours from ladder up to cleanup. Multi-flue caps and top-mount caps on prefab chimneys take longer, usually 2 to 3 hours, because the footprint is larger and the sealing work is more involved.
Yes, we keep a working inventory of the most common Gelco cap sizes on our Dallas trucks, including standard single-flue and multi-flue models. If your flue is an unusual size, we order the right cap and return within a few days. Either way, you’ll know the price before we order anything.
