Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Why Dallas Homeowners Choose Gelco Chimney Cleaning

Gelco chimney cleaning in Dallas is a service we perform regularly for homeowners whose clay flue tile systems have accumulated creosote, cracked from thermal shock, or developed crown and cap failures. As an independent Gelco service provider, we’re not authorized by the manufacturer, but we work on their flue tile systems, multi-flue caps, and top-mount dampers every week and carry both OEM-spec and superior aftermarket components for faster turnaround. If you own a home in Dallas with a Gelco flue system, call (361) 314-3193 and we’ll give you the price before anyone touches a brush.

Dallas homes have a specific relationship with Gelco products. The city’s mix of early 20th-century Craftsman and Tudor homes in neighborhoods like Lakewood and Oak Cliff, plus thousands of mid-century ranch houses across the metro, means many chimneys were built with Gelco clay flue tiles that have now seen fifty to eighty years of service. Those tiles handle Dallas’s short, sharp cold snaps poorly. A Gelco round tile that’s been heating and cooling gradually for decades will crack when a February freeze drops temperatures twenty degrees in one night and the homeowner builds a hot fire. We see that pattern constantly.

The humid subtropical climate adds another layer. Dallas summers are long and wet, and the off-season is when squirrels and birds move into unused flues. By the time fall arrives, a Gelco flue that was swept clean in March may have a nest, three feet of leaves, and stage-2 creosote from last winter’s fires still coating the tile walls. That’s why annual inspection and our Chimney Sweep services matter here, not just annual sweeping.

Why Trust Ashby Chimney Dallas for Your Gelco Chimney Cleaning?

We’ve been servicing chimneys in the Dallas area since 2002, and Gelco clay flue systems have been part of the job the entire time. Nathan Corliss, our owner, learned the trade at Los Angeles Trade-Technical College and spent years working on old masonry fireboxes before running crews in Dallas for well over a decade. During a long stretch of work in Lakewood, he saw more Gelco flue tiles with glaze-stage creosote than most sweeps see in a lifetime. That experience shapes how we approach every Gelco job now.

When we open a Gelco flue, we’re not guessing. We know the 6×6 round tile dimensions, the 8×12 rectangular geometry, and the cap fitments across residential and light-commercial lines. We know where Gelco crowns fail first and what stage-3 creosote does to clay tile walls. We carry OEM Gelco flue tiles and caps for systems that need matched geometry, and we stock aftermarket stainless steel top-mount dampers and crown coatings that outperform Gelco’s original cementitious parts. Tell you the price first, do the work right, put it in writing – that’s the whole job. It applies to every Gelco service call we run.

Every Gelco repair we complete gets a written price before work begins and a written guarantee when it’s done. If a covered repair fails inside the guarantee period, we come back and fix it at no charge. That’s the 365-Day Done Right Promise, and it’s not an add-on you pay extra for. It’s how we’ve operated under the Kingswell Guarantee standard since the beginning.

Common Gelco Chimney Cleaning Problems We Fix in Dallas

  • Stage-3 creosote glaze on Gelco flue tiles. Years of wood burning in Dallas fireplaces causes creosote to build up in layers on Gelco clay tiles until it hardens into a shiny, tar-like glaze. Mechanical removal with standard wire brushes risks fracturing the tile underneath. We pre-soften the glaze with a chemical treatment, then remove it carefully so the tile surface stays intact. This is the most common issue we find in Gelco flues across Dallas, especially in homes where decorative fireplaces get heavy use during short winter cold snaps.
  • Thermal-shock cracks in Gelco round tiles. A Gelco 6×6 round clay tile expands when it heats. During a Dallas cold snap, the outside of the chimney stays near freezing while the inside climbs to several hundred degrees in minutes. The differential stress cracks the tile, usually in a vertical line running from the top of one tile down into the next. Flue gas seeps through that crack into the chase, and if the crack runs below the smoke shelf, it can backdraft into the living space.
  • Eroded mortar joints between Gelco flue tiles. Gelco tiles are laid in segments with mortar joints between them. Acidic condensate from burning high-moisture wood – common in Dallas where firewood often sits in humid garages – eats away at the mortar over time. Once the joints crumble, tiles shift out of alignment, and the draft reverses. We see this frequently in 1970s ranches across Dallas where the original flue liners were never relined.
  • Spider-web cracking and deterioration on Gelco factory crowns. Gelco’s original cementitious crowns are poured thin. After a few Dallas freeze-thaw cycles, tiny cracks spread across the surface like a spider web. Water works into those cracks, freezes, expands, and widens them. Eventually the crown spalls and water migrates down the flue annulus, staining the firebox and weakening the masonry below. We repair these with high-bond polymer crown coatings that flex with temperature changes instead of cracking.
  • Rusted Gelco chimney caps and draft problems. Gelco caps, especially on multi-flue chimneys, tend to rust out at the seams and where the fasteners penetrate. A rusted cap lets rain pool on the flue offset, which accelerates tile erosion and creates a damp, smoky firebox. In Dallas’s humid climate, cap replacement is one of the most common Gelco service requests we handle, usually paired with crown repair.

Gelco Parts & Our Repair-vs-Replace Approach

For Gelco systems, we install OEM flue tiles and caps when the existing structure is intact and needs geometry-matched replacement. A 1960s chimney built with Gelco 8×12 rectangular tiles needs the same tile dimensions going back in, or the offset won’t line up and the draft suffers. We keep common Gelco tile sizes and cap fitments in local Dallas stock, which means most repairs don’t wait on a shipping window.

But we don’t default to OEM when a better part exists. Gelco’s original cementitious crowns are thin and crack-prone. We recommend aftermarket stainless steel top-mount dampers and polymer crown coatings that hold up better in Dallas’s freeze-thaw cycles and humid summers. The honest position is this: if the clay tiles show less than 30% spalling, we repair before we replace. Spot-repairing one or two cracked tiles makes sense. If the spalling runs through most of the stack, a full Gelco flue rebuild is often cheaper over five years than repeated patching, and we’ll tell you that directly, with the numbers in writing. Our Gelco Service Process – Step by Step

  1. 1
Diagnosis. We run a camera inspection through the full Gelco flue length and show you the footage. You’ll see exactly where the spalling is, what the creosote level is, and whether the tiles are cracked or just dirty. Nothing gets recommended that you haven’t seen with your own eyes.
  2. 2
Removal and surface prep. If stage-3 glazed creosote is present, we pre-soften it chemically before any mechanical brushing. For cracked Gelco tiles, we remove the damaged sections and clean the surrounding mortar joints back to sound material. This is the step where rushing fractures more tiles.
  3. 3
Repair or replacement. We set matched Gelco tiles for spot repairs, rebuild offsets when the geometry has shifted, and replace crowns and caps with materials chosen to outlast the original. Every part we install is from a recognized chimney-trade brand – Gelco, DuraFlex, HeatShield, or equivalent – not whatever happened to be in the van.
  4. 4
Draft test and verification. Before we call the job done, we test the draft with the firebox closed and open, check for smoke rollback at the throat, and confirm the cap and damper are seating correctly. If it doesn’t pull, it’s not done.
  5. 5
Written guarantee. Every Gelco repair gets a written guarantee. If a covered repair fails inside the guarantee period, we return and correct it at no charge. That’s part of the 365-Day Done Right Promise, and it’s included with the job, not sold separately.
